Tpay is coming to high street shops. It enables businesses to accept payments via smartphone and QR codes

The TpayGO feature is a module within the Tpay app, which was made available earlier this year to online shop owners using this operator’s services

Tpay has launched a new version of its mobile app. Thanks to this, it can now offer payment processing services to high-street shops as well. Using the app, a retailer can generate a QR code leading to the payment page and display it on their smartphone to the customer. The customer then scans the code, which directs them to the payment gateway, selects their preferred payment method – just as they would in an online shop – and completes the transaction.

By focusing on QR code payments, Tpay is taking a different approach to traditional payment terminal operators, who offer so-called softPOS systems. These are usually based on contactless payments using an NFC module.

Among the advantages of its solution, Tpay highlights the ability to offer payment methods not typically available on payment terminals, such as deferred payments or installments. TpayGO also allows several transactions to be processed simultaneously – if a customer needs more time, for example, to fill in an installment application, the transaction can be ‘pinned’ to the clipboard whilst the next customer is served. The app also supports quick payments via Blik – by entering the code directly into the merchant’s app. If such a transaction is declined, TpayGO displays the reason for the failure (e.g., incorrect code or exceeded limit), which is another feature distinguishing this solution from traditional terminals. The app itself is free to use. The operator charges a commission on settled transactions. Using a contactless softPOS usually requires a fixed subscription fee.

In practice, the payment process is similar to e-commerce transactions, except that it is initiated via a QR code. After scanning the code, the payer can choose from the most popular payment methods, such as Blik, Apple Pay, or Google Pay, or proceed to the transaction panel and pay using one of the methods offered by the retailer, e.g., deferred payments (PayPo, Twisto), Pekao installments, or Pragma Pay. Payment confirmation can be received by scanning another QR code or via a link in an email or text message.

The payment acceptance module is part of the Tpay app, which you may have read about on cashless.pl back in February. The app enables, amongst other things, the processing of payments across multiple shops simultaneously, balance monitoring, processing refunds, and user management. At the time, it was announced that the app would also accept cashless payments at points of sale, a feature that has now been introduced.
