On the example of statistics from this bank, you can get an idea of the popularity of individual mobile payments in Poland

The SGB Bank data shows that although there are fewer Apple Pay users than those using Google Pay, the former pay more frequently and spend more. And Garmin Pay and Fitbit Pay are niches

While banks from Poland fairly regularly provide information on the general popularity of mobile payments among their clients, they are reluctant to boast about the number of users of individual systems. Hence, there is a lack of reliable data on how many people in Poland use Apple Pay, Google Pay or other similar solutions. Sometimes, however, I manage to persuade one of the institutions to be more open in this regard. In this way, you can find out what is the difference in the scale of interest in individual mobile payment systems.

This time, I managed to get detailed statistics from the SGB bank, i.e. the association of cooperative banks that offers a wide range of mobile payments: Apple Pay, Garmin Pay, Google Pay, Fitbit Pay and Blik.

It will surely come as no surprise that Google Pay is the most popular mobile contactless payment solution among its customers. It allows transactions with smartphones with the Android operating system, which has the largest share in the market of mobile devices. Therefore, it is the most easily available and it could be concluded from the earlier data published by some banks that Google Pay is the leader in mobile contactless payments.

This is also the case in SGB, where customers used Google Pay on 14,855 devices at the end of June. This month, they made almost 103,000 transactions with a total value of PLN 5.1 million. Apple Pay was second in terms of the number of devices with active payments - over 12.6 thousand. Interestingly, however, Apple Pay users made more transactions with this instrument - about 6.7 million and for a larger total amount - 108.3 thousand. Thus, the thesis is confirmed that Apple Pay users, although there are fewer of them, pay more frequently and spend more than Google Pay users.

The two other contactless mobile payment systems available in Poland, i.e. Garmin Pay and Fitbit Pay, operating on smartwatches from both manufacturers, are a niche. In June, the payments of the first one were more popular among SGB customers. They operated on 428 devices, and with their help, 3.8 thousand transactions for the amount of over PLN 265 thousand were carried out. zł. Fitbit Pay, on the other hand, was launched by SGB customers only on 11 devices. Customers paid with this system only 259 times and spent 12 thousand. zł.

Among the available mobile payment systems, Blik was the most popular among SGB customers in June. This month, it was actively used by almost 43,000 bank customers who made over 97,000 transactions with a value of PLN 11.7 million. However, Blik is mainly used for online payments. This may change soon, however, when it will be able to make contactless payments in stationary stores. I wonder how this will affect the use of Apple Pay or Google Pay.
