Deposit refunds directly to payment card accounts may become standard in Poland

More operators have already begun installing, or say they plan to install, reverse vending machines that return deposits not as vouchers but as cash paid to a card

PolKa and Reselekt are the two latest operators of so-called reverse vending machines to install devices that return deposits to accounts linked to customers’ payment cards. The information was reported by money.pl. Earlier, Kaucja.pl began installing such machines on a large scale, as you could read on cashless.pl. PolCard has begun specializing in handling payments for this type of solution.

According to information released a few days ago, PolKa (Polska Kaucja) has already launched its first machines of this kind in Zamość and in Warsaw’s Białołęka district. Reselekt, meanwhile, says it will launch its first few such machines soon, although their locations have not yet been disclosed. Kaucja.pl, by contrast, can boast the most advanced network of devices returning deposits to cards. It is currently installing around 15 of them per week and ultimately wants to have 4,000 such reverse vending machines.

Most reverse vending machines operating under the system recently introduced on the Polish market allow customers to recover deposits for returnable bottles, for example in the form of vouchers. These vouchers, either paper-based or digital and available in a mobile app, can be used to pay for purchases in the store where the machine is installed. However, this solution forces customers to decide to shop at a specific retail chain’s outlet, which may be inconvenient for some. It therefore seems that machines returning deposits to bank accounts may in the future become not only an alternative but also a standard on the Polish market.
