66.7 Percent of Card Transactions on the Polish Market Are Contactless

The central bank's latest report for the second quarter of 2017 also shows a significant increase in the average contactless transaction amount

Data from the National Bank of Poland suggests that contactless payments constituted as much as 66.7 percent of all cashless card payments in the second quarter of 2017. This means a 2 percentage point increase compared to the first quarter, when 64.5 percent of all card payments were contactless. Data obtained from Mastercard and Visa suggests that Poland is one of the world's top markets in this area.

What's even more interesting is the data regarding contactless transaction amounts. Customers spent 31.6 billion zł using contactless payment methods in the second quarter - 48.5 percent of all cashless card transactions. This is a significant increase compared to the previous quarter, when contactless payments constituted 42.5 percent of all cashless transactions. The average payment amount has also grown from 44.3 zł at the end of March to 48.7 zł at the end of June.

Let's bring up some other important information on card payments in the second quarter: In June there were 37.8 million payment cards on the Polish market (approx. 100 thousand more than in March). There were 1.163 billion transactions made, 83.6 percent of which were cashless. The value of all the transactions was 163 billion zł, 40 percent of which was cashless. The average number of transactions made with the same card in the second quarter was 25.7 compared to 22.6 in the first quarter.
